COMIC CON

Two scenes from my lovely/awesome/awkward/hard-working/interesting weekend:

  1. Drove down to Irvine and Costa Mesa (my old college stomping grounds) on Friday and was thankfully able to see two old friends whom I miss VERY much (on the left Layla, on the right Ladi).  We ate good food (more on that later), caught up on each others’ lives, and taught Layla the importance of reading The Hunger Games as soon as humanly possible.  Love them, miss them terribly already.
  2. For the rest of the weekend, I was down in San Diego for a tiny, minuscule convention called Comic Con.  And by tiny and minuscule, I mean the exact opposite (if that’s not at all confusing).  Lots o’ people, and droids?, and superheroes?, and angry bird costumes?, and thousands upon thousands of fanboys.  I went down for work (we had an event on Saturday) and it was kind of AWESOME to see so many unique characters (literally) roam the streets of downtown San Diego.  For example, we ran into a gang of pirates at Old Spaghetti Factory, who in celebrating some sort of victory (I’m assuming they commandeered a ship or something of that nature), yelled out “To the upstairs bar for rum & debauchery!”.  Meanwhile, I’m ordering mushroom marinara with noodles and a side salad.

Oh life, sometimes I just love you.

First of all…
405 freeway

That is one empty freeway!  Speaking of empty freeways,
LA was a complete ghost town this weekend.
We got to Renegade in 10 minutes from West LA (unheard of)
and also ventured over to Silverlake for the rest of the afternoon
(more on that later).
So “Carmageddon” turned out to be quite nice.  No traffic anywhere!

renegade craft fair

Renegade Craft Fair was amazing once again.  If you ever get the chance to go
in one of your cities, I highly recommend!
Beautiful handmade and vintage jewelry,
letterpress, stationary, custom-made stamps,
washi tape galore, baker’s twine,
art art and more art,
handmade soaps and candles,
basically anything and everything you could ever want.

I didn’t take that many photos because I’m a really good blogger
and forgot my camera.
Oh, and I spent all o’ my time spending cash too.
What did I buy, you ask?
Several bracelets and rings, a handful of cards and stationary, a “hello” stamp,
another washi masking tape, a craft magazine called Uppercase, and piece of wood art.
Renegade has so many great things to offer and I was happy to support!
But here are a few instagrams from the day:

Carmageddon

renegrade craft fair

You may or may not be familiar with the term “Carmageddon.”
It refers to this weekend’s closure of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles and let me tell you, people are in a straight-up frenzy.
Since I live on the westside of LA, I’ll be majorly effected by said Carmageddon and have been advised by many not to leave my apartment this entire weekend.

But, I say to the naysayers, Renegade Craft Fair is this weekend in downtown!
There is no way I’m missing that!  Freeway closure or not, I will get there.

So while most people will do the sane and rational thing of avoiding the roads at all possible,
I will be trekking it downtown (taking the surface streets!) for a craft fair.
Yes, Renegade is that good.

But, of course, as soon as I’ve got my fill of crafting,
I will stay away from the roads and spend my weekend on Pinterest!

Progress

So we may not have made it out to Silverlake this weekend and Kyle may have slept the entire day on Saturday (men), but we ended up having a very successful weekend.

Here’s why…

We got a bunch of new art frames for our soon-to-be gallery wall.  The empty, white space above the couch in the living room is just begging for some color and we can’t wait to showcase our hodge podge collection of art:

I picked up this starry pillow on sale at West Elm for $14.  It really spruces up our all-white (and wrinkly) bed:

We booked a trip to Portland.  We’ll be heading there in September for lots of good food, some exploring, and (lucky for us!!) a Bon Iver concert:

This has nothing to do with progress but I made a yummy pasta last night, complete with zucchini, grape tomatoes, olive tapenade, and feta cheese.  Ain’t it purty!:

hammer museum

This photo was taken last night at the Hammer Museum in Westwood.  See, they have the right idea about string lights!
Every Thursday evening in the month of July, Hammer is hosting a free show with our local public radio station, KCRW.  Besides the fact that I love anything free, lots of real good up-and-coming bands are playing on these nights.
Like last night for instance, boyfriend and I specifically went to the event to see a Brit band called Graffiti6.  They have become recent favorites so I was super excited to see them live and boy oh boy is their lead singer dreamy/handsome/amazing.  He’s going to be a star, I can already tell!

Anyway, what are your plans for this weekend?
We’re heading over to Silverlake to visit Broome St. General Store and eat at Forage,
finding some cheap frames for recent art prints I bought on Etsy (this one and this one),
rearranging the bedroom and moving things around a bit,
possibly visiting the beach,
and getting a visit from my cousin Kelsie.

Enjoy the sun!  By the way, what the hell happened to the week?  I completely forgot I owned and operated a blog, that’s how fast it went.
