In the kitchen

kitchen decor

wire frame letters, farmer’s market basket, spicy parmesan corn seasoning, dot & zig zag serving spoons, serving bowl, jade cake stand, water bottleskey bottle opener

Now that most of the boxes are unpacked in my new apartment, it’s about time to amp up the decor factor.  My plan is to focus on one room at a time, starting with my favorite, the kitchen.  I’m thinking about adding small instances of bold colors, like water bottles and cake stands, and some texture via patterned fruit bowls and wire-framed letters.  I plan to hang those E-A-T letters above the stove (are you allowed to hang things above stoves??), not that I really need any visual reminders to eat or anything like that.  I’m pretty, pretty good at it last time I checked.  And speaking of eating, who doesn’t love a little corn seasoning in the summer time, am I right??

Showers, Popcorn, and Lots o’ Cupcakes

Last weekend, my best friends, Jaymee and Sarah, and I hosted a baby shower for our darling prego lover, Heather.  We decided on a carnival themed shower because a.) we love desserts and candy; b.) we love stripey straws; and c.) we love flag bunting.

The party turned out just perfect thanks to Jaymee’s amazing decor and signage (which, by the way, Jaymee has a new blog and it’s the cutest EVER and and anddd she does the most AMAZING graphic design i.e. blog headers, invitations, logos, ANYTHING IN THE WORLD so hit her up if you need some design done!).  I mean, look how adorable those signs are!!

Sarah and I were in charge of all food and boy oh boy did we whip up lots o’ food.  We made a fruit salad, green salad, my favorite Mediterranean orzo salad, a million pretty cupcakes, fresh homemade strawberry lemonade, and watermelon mint lemonade (those lemonade recipes will be posted soon as Sarah and I created quite a delicious concoction!!).  We also had trays of pasta ordered.  Everything was yummy.  And the best part was that preggy Heather loved it all and that’s what matters!!

PLUS, all of my best friends flew out from all over the good ol’ USA and I swear to you, we always have the BEST time when we’re all together.  Miss them already.

Our lemonade station complete with mason jars and stripe straws we got from Shop Sweet Lulu, as I posted here:

I made the cupcake flag toppers using this tutorial.  How sweet are they:

The candy station full of sweet treets:

Heather’s Ready to POP popcorn station (again, Jaymee’s signage is just too cute!):

Jaymee made this flag bunting, she is SO CRAFTY!!!!:

Jaymee’s momma is a balloon-making extraordinaire:

P.S. not pictured are the most adorable striped pinwheels that Jaymee made.  I took 3 photos of them, all of which are blurry.  I need to learn how to use a camera oouuffff.

chevron pattern

Adding some fun elements to the new place in the form of chevron stripes: 1) a soap dish used to hold my gold rings; and 2) a pillow to decorate my couch.

I love incorporating bold patterns into my life. More to come!

Decor inspiration

Mr. Kyle and I are rigorously apartment hunting right now.  So exciting!  When I’m not scouring rental websites for the perfect apartment (perfect apartments don’t exist, I’ve recently discovered), I’m scrolling through decor images on Pinterest and various blogs to figure out exactly the kind of things we want to include in our place (which, by the way, is THE MOST FUN task I’ve ever done!).  Here’s what I discovered:

  • I’m a fan of stark whites and shades of gray.
  • We definitely want a gallery wall filled with our art collection (and by art collection I mean Kyle’s posters and cute prints I’ve found on Etsy).  I want the frames to be all shapes, sizes, and colors – a total hodge podge, if you will.
  • Farmhouse tables are my favorite things ever – distressed wood, full of character and imperfections, sigh.
  • Patterns I’m fond of: chevron stripes (OBSESSED!!), ikat, diamonds, geometric shapes
  • A giant bookcase is a must.  Where am I going to put all my Jane Austen’s and Harry Potter’s?
  • Colorful and textured pillows are the bee’s knees.
  • Stacks of coffee table books are the coolest ever.
  • I pretty much want everything from West Elm.

Two Ways: Mint Green + Pale Peach

mint green and peach

Right now, I’m absolutely smitten with pastel-centric color palettes, especially the combination of minty greens and pale peaches.  Besides the fact that it sounds like a yummy dessert/snack (sliced peaches & mint tea? no? am I the only one that has food on my mind constantly?), this color combination is feminine and sweet and quintessentially spring.

So pretty much, I wish I was wearing a pleated mint green skirt and peach blouse while filling my mint green and peach Ikea storage boxes with awesome coffee table books and knick knacks.
