Simplicity

There are times when I love an over-the-top outfit or a rich, hearty meal (i.e. fried chicken and biscuits in Portland…twice).  Other times, I only think about the simplest of pleasures.  Avocado toast.  A basic, yet effortless LBD.  An oversized denim shirt.  Fluffy white sheets.

Especially on this rainy day in Los Angeles, all I need are simple things.

Portland Photo Diary: Part I

portland

I thought I’d be able to make just one post on Portland and be satisfied but clearly we’re being a little self-indulgent over here because I have quite a few more photos to post after this one.  Just call me an over-sharer.  Anyway, so Portland is kind of amazing.  Especially when the sun is shining and the sky’s a bright blue and bloody marys are being served to you.  No but seriously, it’s such a lovely city!  The transportation system is easy, the buildings are old and ornate, the streets run alphabetical (no but for serious), people still do tricks with yo-yos, and the food is absolutely incomparable.

After we arrived in Portland, we had dinner at Gruner, a German-inspired restaurant with all of my favorite things, like pretzel bread and deviled eggs.  The meal was perfection in every way.

The next day, we had brunch at Tasty & Sons (a MUST GO if you’re in Portland) and filled ourselves with real healthy things like biscuits and fried chicken.  We also shopped at Ink & Peat, Larkpress, Collage, and Townshend Teas.

Later in the afternoon, we walked around downtown and shopped at Alder & Co (my new favorite place), Canoe, Frances May (an AMAZING women’s/men’s store!!), Tanner Goods, and Blackbird.  Portland has REALLY GOOD shopping!  Who knew!

We stopped for a snack at Lovejoy Bakers and walked around the Pearl District – my favorite district by far.  It’s so cute and has street names like “Lovejoy” – how could you not dig this area?

We had dinner at Clyde Common that night (next door to our hotel) – was too busy stuffing my face to take photos though.  I just realized that I’m giving you a literal play-by-play of my trip.  Is this TMI?  Yeah, probably.

More on Monday where I’ll dive into the glories of Stumptown coffee and the breathtaking Portland Farmer’s Market.  Tomorrow is Friday Love List of course!

I like you, Portland

You know that feeling you get when you realize you’ve eaten far too much food in one sitting but there’s still a few bites left so you might as well finish your plate but, oh my, now I’m feeling sort of faint but oh heck the waiter is bringing out the dessert menu now and “carpe diem” let’s order the peach-huckleberry cobbler because it sounds fun and delicious?  Familiar with that feeling at all?  Well, that perfectly describes my trip to Portland.

Every day we overate, but I wouldn’t change a thing.  It was wonderful in every way possible.  I’m still sorting through all my photos but will post a little photo diary very soon.  A HUGE thanks to the 3 LOVELY ladies who did guest blogs.  LOVE YOU.

Oh and that photo up there?  Had to wear loose clothing to meals…pants wouldn’t button.  You know the deal.  Wearing an Alexa Chung for Madewell dress, J. Crew blouse, J. Crew sweater, Jeffrey Campbell boots, and an Alexa Chung for Madewell clutch (similar here).

Hi!

I’m Ann-Marie and I am so excited to be guest-blogging here at The Style Eater. I’ve known Janelle since our freshman year of high school, when I totally bought the same pair of DVS skater shoes that she had (lord help us understand why those were ever considered stylish?!). Let’s just say, she has always been a fashion idol of mine!  🙂 So while she is rubbing elbows with Fred Armisen in Portlandia, I will tell you a little about my slight obsession with thrifting.

California will always hold the number one spot in my heart in virtually every other way, but I have to say it: Utah has the best thrifting. When I moved here last year to take on an awesome job in the crafts industry, I quickly discovered Deseret Industries. Okay, so it’s totally owned by the Mormons, but it is AWESOME! There are a bunch of stores within a thirty mile radius of where I live, and you better believe I hit up each and every one of them as often as possible. Here are a some of my favorite items to look for:

Bowls, bowls, and more bowls. I use them to hold just about everything, from craft supplies to food to keys.

Frames in all different shapes and sizes. It doesn’t matter what color they come in because you can spray paint the heck out of them to match your decor. For less than two dollars a pop, creating gallery walls in your space has never been more affordable!

Trays + other types of decorative holders. In this case, I bought a glass cabinet window for three bucks and turned it into a tray for my coffee table. Easy peasy.

Typewriters. Currently I am the owner of two typewriters that are both fully-functioning and as awesome as ever. I love using them for all my paper projects and labeling needs.

And the one area I have not had much luck in…clothes. It doesn’t help matters when most of the clothing section has lovely(?) pieces like the one above, but I have faith that the right items will come my way one day!

A few key things to remember when thrifting…

  • There are very few things that a good scrubbing and a few coats of spray paint can’t fix. Look beyond the current state of the object and think about it’s potential.
  •  Don’t be afraid to dig in and move things around. There are bargains to be had, so get in there!
  • Sometimes it’s fun to go hunting when you have a few desired items in mind, but I always score my best finds when I simply keep my eyes open to whatever may be there that day.
  • Always have a bottle of hand sanitizer on you at all times! 😉

Happy thrifting!

friday love list

When Janelle asked me to guest blog while she and Kyle are in Portland, I got really excited because even though she is one of my best friends in real life, I feel like “guest-blogging” makes you a legit blogger.  Right!?  I was even more excited when she told me she wanted me to do her Friday Love List because I absolutely LOVE her Friday Love Lists and was excited to create my own!  So moving right along, here is my somewhat random list of things that I am loving.

  1. I live in Hawaii.  And right around this time I really start to miss California because of that season called fall that we never really see over here.  An average temp of 85 degrees means boots and scarves will cause profuse sweating (and a lot of strange looks).  If I did live in CA, these and these would be in my closet ASAP.  and my wallet would be empty.  but that’s besides the point.
  2. I recently moved into my own apartment and i’ve been on the hunt for the perfect chic chalkboard for my kitchen.  Easier said than done.  When I saw this cute DIY tutorial on Pinterest, I was sold.  And for $15?  Yeeee haw, sign me up.
  3. I have a slight crush on Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS shoes (a philanthropist, entrepreneur genius, and good looking).  They recently launched their eyewear collection and I really reallllyyy want a pair of these sunglasses.  Like the shoes that TOMS sells, same goes for their sunnies:  you buy a pair and they give a pair away.  Talk about an incentive!  All in the name of charity, right?
  4. My birthday is this weekend.  I’m mostly excited because it’s an excuse to eat copious amounts ice cream.  and cupcakes.  My boyfriend has lots of fun stuff planned for the weekend and hasn’t told me what we are doing yet so I am pretty excited to see what he has up his sleeve – I love surprises!

Happy Friday!  Now I’m just hoping this work day goes by super fast.

Thanks Janny for letting me guest post for you!!  Hope you and your honey buns are living it up in the land of Port 🙂
