Spring Forward

March 1, 2010

Lately, I’ve been boggled down with fall trends but since fall is still 6 or 7 months away, I say we get back to spring because it’s just around the corner.  Goodbye shearling, arm warmers, and wool coats – we’ll see you soon!

Every day this week, I’m going to show you one of my ideal spring outfits.  You know the kind: an outfit that I wish I was wearing but for some unforeseen reason (lack of money, legs too white, still raining outside, not cool enough), I’m not.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to recreate these ideal outfits in the future (and by the future, I mean like asap).

Ideal Spring Outfit #1: Sheer Pastels, Khaki, and Two-Toned Oxfords

  1. A.L.C. Pocket Tee, Shopbop, $145 [Image via Shopbop]
  2. J. Crew Cotton Nico Skirt, J. Crew, $59.50 [Image via J. Crew]
  3. Anthropologie Spring Thaw Bralette, Anthropologie, $44 [Image via Anthropologie]
  4. J. Crew Leather Equestrian Belt, J. Crew, $45 [Image via J. Crew]
  5. Rag & Bone Cap Toe Lace Up Oxfords, Shopbop, $325 [Image via Shopbop]
  6. Anthropologie Woven Pendulum Sling Bag, Anthropologie, $118 [Image via Anthropologie]

This spring, it’s all about the sheer pastels and lace bralettes.  Though I’m not down to wear ultra, ultra sheer, this A.L.C. tee has just the right amount of sheerness to it.  Paired with a khaki skirt, this outfit is the perfect dose of feminine.  Since I’ve been wearing black all winter, this will be a lovely change in my wardrobe.  And what’s a spring outfit without oxfords?  I love the two-toned aspect of these Rag & Bone oxfords!  Oh, spring, where are you??  I can’t wait to dress for the sun!

…how amazing was the Burberry Prorsum AW10 show? Christopher Bailey left me speechless/breathless/awed/amazed/etc. Basically I wasn’t breathing for a solid 30 seconds (probably not healthy). Burberry knows. how. to make. a damn. coat. That’s what it boils down to.

The first part of the show was an aviation-inspired theme, full of oversized, shearling-lined (OBSESSED), button-and-belt-detailed coats.

It then transitioned into more of a military theme with navy blazers adorned with gold buttons. Pants anyone? No thanks, says Burberry. Who needs them!

Of course it wouldn’t be a Burberry show without a trench here and there! Also, the level of shearling increased as the show progressed until, at the very end, there was an explosion of full-on shearling coats. Sigh.

We can’t forget to discuss the gorgeous shearling-lined, buckle boots in the last 2 images. Love. Love. Love. Christopher Bailey, you make beautiful, well-constructed, wearable, desirable clothes!

Also, if you didn’t get a chance to watch the Burberry show (which streamed LIVE on the internet) and have a spare 28 minutes and 45 seconds to devote to said explosion of shearling bliss, you must see it! Click on: http://live.burberry.com/. If you want to skip right to the show itself, go to minute 11:50. As an added bonus, if you look real hard, you can see Kristen Stewart (front row, obvs) bobbing her legs to the music and Mary-Kate (gasp!) lowering her ever-present sunglasses (once or twice) to get a more desirable view of the Burb coats.

What A Spectacle

These vintage-inspired Moscot Originals (in the Lemtosh frame) have been on my NEED list for quite some time. They have a decades-old construction with a totally modern vibe – the quintessential timeless classic.

The Lemtosh lenses are sleek and sophisticated with a touch of nerdy – precisely why I love and need them. Since I’m in the market for a new pair of glasses, these will definitely fit the bill. And hopefully fit my face too?

Ever since New York Fashion Week, I have fall on my mind. I’m over spring and summer already. I just want to bundle up in as many layers as possible (even though more than one layer in Southern California is unheard of).

Now that NYFW is over, there were three major things I noticed that I’m dying to replicate for fall:

  1. LAYERS! (obvs) Layer it up! 3, 4, 7 layers – it doesn’t matter as long as you pile it on. The trick is to use thin layers so that you don’t overdo it. Start with a sheer tee and go from there. Top it with a long cardigan (or 2) and top that with a blazer/raincoat/cape coat/peacoat (any kind of coat will do) and then…
  2. BELT YOUR COAT. It’s seriously the easiest way to style up your oversized winter coat. Belt it! Everyone and their editor was belting their coats this NYFW. I loved it! A thiner belt works best but that doesn’t mean a larger belt is out of the question. That is totes up to you, my friend.
  3. ARM WARMERS. At least I think they’re called arm warmers?? But this was another trend I noticed both inside and outside the tents at Bryant Park. Not only are they great layering tool but they look super chic as well. Best part? They allow your fingers to be free (Blackberry and iPhone friendly).

If you’re living in cooler climates, now is a great time to test out these fall essentials because it will start warming up soon enough! It’s 60 degrees in SoCal today and on my scale, that’s freezing. So I will definitely be testing the waters on these 3 trends asap. That is until I see a super cute dress and I’ll be yearning for spring all over again…

New York Fashion Week Favorites

I’ve spent the last several days compiling a list of my favorite images from New York Fashion Week. After looking through every single runway show and presentation from the past week, I have about 175 images that I’ve saved in a “favorite” folder on my desktop. Yes, it’s quite a list! Of course, I won’t bore you with all 175 images so I’ve narrowed it down even further to my top 40 looks. I guess that’s still a large number of favorites but I just couldn’t condense any further!

Overall, my favorite collections were Rag & Bone, Suno, and Proenza Schouler. The level of layering at Rag & Bone was borderline dramatic (aka perfection), the exotic prints at Suno were unique and fun, and the Proenza collection was just the right amount of leg.

Though those were my overall favorite collections, there were so many high points over the course of New York Fashion Week. Here are my favorites!!*
