BROOKLYN PHOTO DIARY

Brooklyn! I dig you. Your beautiful character shines through in every building facade, in every corner bodega, in every fire escape, in every unique shop and cafe. I just wish we had a little more time! But, we’ll be back soon…

Sigh. Planning out our Brooklyn day was by far the easiest part of prepping for this crazy adventure of ours. We made a very long list of shops and places to visit (a full list coming tomorrow) and checked them off one-by-one. This was the only time during our 9-day trip that we focused primarily on shopping. Oh but the shopping is SO GOOD in Brooklyn – it’s like a giant Pinterest board full of amazing treasures.

Besides shopping, we also had lunch at Smorgasburg (a food market in Williamsburg that is definitely worth a visit) and spent the afternoon hanging out at the Wythe Hotel‘s rooftop bar. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day! That is until both of our iPhone’s ran out of battery at the same time and we had to navigate back to the city with just our wits and smarts. Good thing it’s not that difficult to get around or else we’d probably still be there.

More tomorrow!

NEW YORK CITY PHOTO DIARY

May 6, 2013

New York never disappoints (never ever!) and this particular trip was no exception. I only wish that we had more time to spend in the city since it was far too short! Even so, we were able to pack in lots of our favorite NYC activities, including shopping in Soho, strolling the High Line, seeing a show at the Bowery Ballroom (Phosphorescent!), and eating all day long. And luckily, we were able to do all of it in warm, sunny weather. Thanks for making it real easy on us California kids, New York.

We stayed at the Ace Hotel (again!) and I love that it’s both centrally located and close to a subway station. It also manages to be cozy, lively, and beautifully understated – a total high/low mix of perfection. Plus, there’s always something fun going on in the lobby every night.

Tomorrow, I’ll share my photos from Brooklyn. I’ve been to Brooklyn before but this time, I completely fell in love with it. It’s just oozing with charm! Then on Wednesday, I’ll share all of the restaurants and shops in both NYC and Brooklyn that we visited. It’s quite a hefty list for 2.5 days in the city, which makes me think that we probably spent far too much money on food and souvenirs. But…you only live once?

WHAT WE ATE ON THE PLANE

May 2, 2013

Filed Under : RECIPES - TRAVEL

When we flew to New York, I made sure to pack LOTS of food for the plane ride. Not necessarily because it was a long flight (5 hours from LA to NY), but because we had 9 days of travel ahead of us and WHO KNOWS what we’d be eating during that time (read: poutine, pizza, and a fair share of bloody mary’s).

In addition to a hefty plane meal, I also stuffed my carry-on with healthy snacks so we could nibble on things during the trip. I don’t know about you but one of my biggest fears in life is being hungry in between meals #firstworldproblems. Here’s what I packed:

Mixed Nuts: I love the individually wrapped packets of trail mix from Trader Joe’s.

Granola: I had plans to make homemade granola but brought this delish TJ’s variety instead. And bonus: it’s packed with fiber and is gluten free.

Apples & almond butter: This is my absolute favorite snack combo. Also, I have a weird relationship with apples. I can’t live without them? So I brought a whole bag of mini-sized gala apples (like 7 apples) in my carry-on. And YEAH, I’m sure New York had apples I could buy but I COULDN’T RISK IT.

Bean dip w/ veggies: I got this whole idea to pack a healthy travel meal from this amazing blog post. I used her recipe for white bean dip, which was beyond delicious and full of protein. The carrots and cucumber sticks were great to snack on throughout the flight.

Farro salad w/ beets, sweet potatoes, and arugula: Now here’s where I REALLY packed in the health. This was our main meal for the flight to New York (FYI i packed 2 full ziploc bags of this salad – the mason jar was just my midnight snack). I roasted sweet potatoes and mixed it with cooked farro, beets, arugula, and chopped raw walnuts. For the dressing, I made a simple apple cider vinaigrette (the same one I used in this recipe). It keeps great at room temperature for a few hours.

Everything worked out pretty smoothly in the end aside from the fact that I made WAY TOO MUCH food for the plane ride. Next time, I will make half as much and maybe not bring a pound of apples?

BACK TO THE GRIND

I’ve been totally off the blogging grid for the past week and for good reason! The wifi situation in Montreal was MEH so I couldn’t do much computing while I was on vacation. But the good news is that everything else about Montreal (and New York and Connecticut!) was downright amazing. We ate nonstop for 9 straight days and only stopped to take photos of pretty buildings. The weather was freezing (for me, anything below 60 degrees is borderline ridiculous) but we managed pretty well and luckily had no rain.

But we’re home now and I have SO MANY photos and stories to share, including all of the fun places we ate and shopped. I’m still trying to sort through my photos (ooh all 1,500 of them?) so it may take me a bit to get them posted but they’ll be up soon! I’ll start with posts on New York, then Connecticut, and then finish with Montreal. So come back for LOTS of travel photos and recaps!

new york city / the style eater

I’m convinced that NYC’s spring is the best kind of spring. Ok I’m sure Washington DC would argue that their cherry blossoms automatically put them in first place, but New York sure comes close! Also, I’m used to seasonless Los Angeles so maybe every other place besides Southern CA has an equally beautiful transition into warmer weather? Either way, I’ve taken about a hundred photos of blooming trees over the last few days in NYC so beware of those kind of pics for the next 20 days or so.

Posting has been light around here and since I’m heading up to Montreal today, it might continue to be light for a few more days. But I’m updating my Instagram pretty much all day long so come find me there! –> @thestyleeater

Happy Spring!
