OUTFIT DETAILS | Madewell dress (old), J. Crew plaid shirt (old, kind of similar), Madewell sandals (old), Coach handbagRayban sunglasses

I forgot to mention that I was going to Toronto for 7 days. I usually alert the masses any time I have a trip planned, but this one snuck up on me and before I knew it, I was 3 days deep into the trip and forgetting what a blog even was, etc. Life happens and don’t I know it. Anyway I’m back!

I would LIKE to say that a Toronto-centric blog post is coming, but I also said that a Lollapalooza post was coming and where the hellz is that one? Still on my iPhone, that’s where it is. So I might post one if my brain can kick it into high gear. In the meantime, check out all of our hard work from Toronto on InStyle.com: here, here, and here.

Anyway, this is a weekend outfit if I’ve ever seen a weekend outfit. I took a seemingly nice dress and messed it up with a flannel shirt, because you know what, it gets real cold in the grocery store and I’m definitely not wearing a full-on jacket now that we’re finally experiencing real summer weather. 80 degrees days, don’t I love you so. I have to bring something to keep me warm in grocery stores though, otherwise I’m shivering like Leo DiCaprio on that plank before he drowns as I’m walking from aisle to aisle.

Also, Kyle asked if my outfit was a nod to the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s In Utero album and you know what, I’m just going to pretend that it is to up my cool factor. I’ve been feeling old and out of touch lately so anything to up that cool factor is FINE BY ME.

WEEKENDS ARE FOR PUP-SHAPED TANS

Weekends are great and all, but 3-day weekends are equivalent to finding $50 in your winter coat, snagging a parking spot in LA, winning the lotto, long walks on the beach, rainbows, pots of gold, ALL THE GOOD THINGS.

I meannnnn….they’re the best, right? A lot of people asked me what I was doing for the long holiday weekend and I’ll be honest with you, I hung out at my parents’ house with my dog.

Sometimes what you really need is a paw in your face to really put things into perspective and my goodness, I’m feeling 100x better already (also my parents’ central AC really did the trick too). My pup and I swam together (as seen in this insta), laid out together, ate Goldfish crackers together, told each other wild stories about life, so on and so forth. He loves when I’m back home because I give him extra scratches and let him up on the lounge chairs when he’s not allowed to be (sorry mom). He also totally messed up my tan lines, but that’s alright because he’s so ridiculously precious. Three cheers for long weekends, adorable pups, and pool days!

YOU HAVE AS MANY HOURS IN THE DAY AS BEYONCE

BUSY GAL

Y’ALL. I pretty much gave up on blogging until I saw this quote floating around Pinterest. IT’S SO TRUE. Beyonce is the hardest working woman on the planet and if we’re working with the same amount of time in this life, then by golly I better get my ass in gear. Blogging, book writing, working out (this one is TBD) – it’s all happening now. So here I am, with my blogger hat on, my work blackberry tucked in my purse, Kyle upstairs on his computer, TV turned off, and we’re blogging, because BEYONCE WOULD DO IT AND SO CAN I.

The truth is, life has been slapping this gal across the face lately and I am tired as BALLS. <–Normally I would edit that out and change it to something a little more PC like “tired as heck” but I ain’t backspacing today, friends. I’m also going to embrace this exhaustion, slap it right back, and do something fruitful with my down time. Mrs. Carter has convinced me that I CAN do all the things in one day, oh yes I can. She also taught me who run the world (the answer is “girls,” if you were wondering). We’re moving forward, onward, and upward because…BEYONCE!

And for as crazy as life has been lately, it’s also been the most exciting and rewarding. So many great things are happening and I’m loving every second of it (tired or not!).

And until next time, I leave you with my favorite time of day: when I get home from work and sit in silence for 5 whole minutes, blocking out all the noise from the day and soaking in the quiet of my home. In those few moments, the sun starts fading, cool air seeps through the open windows, and my fridge purrs softly. I feel nothing but peace. After those 5 minutes, I’m up and on to the next (insert ANY AND ALL Beyonce gif’s here).

CHICAGO / THE STYLE EATER

Chicago: the land of the Cubs, deep-dish pizza, and lots of butterfly tattoos. Seriously, I’ve never seen so many butterfly tattoos in my life. Oh but I love you! This was my first time in Chicago and I enjoyed every second of my visit. It was a perfect storm (pun intended) of amazing weather, delicious food, great company, and FUN. Don’t you just love when that happens?

We spent 3 full days in the city: 2 days exploring and 1 at Lollapalooza (Saturday). I’ll share our Lolla adventure in another post, but our days exploring were PACKED with activities that really gave us a taste of the city. We wandered through Wicker Park, went to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field (magical, I tell you), watched a show at Second City comedy club (SO FUNNY), did the architecture boat tour on the river that flows through downtown (I couldn’t recommend this more!!), took photos at the infamous Bean, and ate deep-dish pizza not once BUT TWICE.

^^The Architecture Boat Tour is a great way to learn about the city and it’s history. I can’t remember the last time I learned so much?

^^Two of my travel companions included my brother, Jake (left), and cousin, Spencer (right). Ladies, they’re single! Hit em up.

CHICAGO / THE STYLE EATER

^^Wicker Park was such a beautiful neighborhood with the most quaint and well-manicured housing. Can I move in?

^^We randomly came across Fish Bar for a late afternoon snack and it ended up being one of our favorite meals. Salmon tartare, shrimp tacos, chowder, and tater tots. Give me all of that again.

CHICAGO / THE STYLE EATER

^^Of course my main boo was there too.

CHICAGO / THE STYLE EATER

^^We loved Heritage General Store, a coffee and bike shop with a whole lotta character. Marcus Mumford rented a few bikes from there just before we walked in. UGHS.

^^Obligatory Bud Light at Wrigley Field for the Cubs vs Dodgers game? We almost caught a few foul balls and it was so funny hearing the Chicago fans taunt the opposing players on the field. So much shit-talking happened and I loved every minute of it.

^^We had the Doughnut Vault for breakfast one morning and if I didn’t say they were mouthwatering bites of heaven, I’d be lying. Not proud of this moment.

CHICAGO / THE STYLE EATER

^^Chicago has a great (and cheap!) bike loan system in downtown that makes it real easy to get around the city.

^^And a blurry pic of deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s because seriously, who takes a clear pic of deep-dish when it’s been cooking for an hour and comes out to your table like a ray of sunshine from the heavens and smelling like pure butter and cheese? I sure as heck don’t.

Now, a few places we visited and loved:
Birchwood Kitchen
for breakfast/lunch (I had an amazing greek yogurt parfait and the boys had sandwiches they raved about)
Wormhole Coffee for nostalgic decor and delicious iced chai
Penelope’s, a great men’s and women’s store, with an array of awesome brands like Ace & Jig and APC
Heritage General Store for pour-over coffee and tea, plus an awesome selection of bike gear
Fish Bar for yummy shrimp tacos, oysters, and fresh fish
Crosbys Kitchen for delicious pre-Cubs game fare
Doughnut Vault for heart attacks and the like
Rooftop at The Wit Hotel for afternoon snacks and drinks
Lou Malnati’s and Pizzeria Uno for deep-dish pizza
RPM for late-night Italian and some amazing cannolis
