A SPRING PURGE

KITCHEN TABLE / THE STYLE EATER

They don’t call it “spring cleaning” for nothing, y’all. It’s always this time of year that I crave a blank slate, starting over, and simplifying. I want to empty my closets, clean out the garage, sell all my furniture, eBay all the things. Between Kyle and I, it’s almost crazy how hoardy we’ve become with the random crap we’ve amassed in the past 3 years of living together. I mean, I don’t think I need that ikea bookshelf I got in college. Or those jeans that never fit right, no matter how much I hoped my butt would change shape. Those have got to go. Plus a million other things that have been collecting dust and serve no purpose. Bye, things!

It feels so good to purge everything, right? I have lofty goals of living with much less. Wish me luck. Or give me some advice, perchance? PERCHANCE? And why does Lady Mary get all the hot suitors? What about poor Edith? Anyway, spring cleaning.

NOOKS & CRANS

around the house / the style eater

January is a notoriously crazy month for me. Things are busy at work, Kyle’s busy at work. I don’t have time to eat properly or do my Tracy Anderson videos (somehow there is always time for french fries though). My birthday comes up and then I’m in my “late twenties” and lots of freakouts and what-the-hells will inevitably happen. I get a giant pimple during Golden Globes weekend and Jared Leto looks me square in the face. All the fails happen in January.

So one morning, instead of feverishly checking emails, I walked around this little home of mine and took survey of my favorite corners, nooks, and crannies – you know, the clean and organized ones because there’s just no question that dirty socks and opened boxes of chocolates are just outside the frame of these photos (I blame Kyle). So I took survey, because as much as I still think my home is nowhere near “done,” there are still small corners that calm my buzzing mind and make me smile. Here are a few of them:

ESSENTIALS: UNIONMADE x BAXTER CANDLES

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted one of my essentials, but since I spend a good portion of my income on candles, I thought it only made sense to share my essential one: Unionmade and Baxter of California’s KML candle. It’s a mouthful, but I promise it smells like perfection. Well I guess that depends on how you define perfection, but for me, a campfire in the middle of the forest is what I’d prefer (not ACTUALLY, just in candle-form). This Unionmade x Baxter candle smells exactly like that.

Don’t forget I’m terrible at describing scents, but it’s a blend of Cedar and Sandalwood, with a layer of musk that really hits you after a few minutes of burning it. It’s not super strong but it definitely makes my whole place smell good. I often pair it with my favorite incense, which adds another layer of campfire, and then you’re outside under the stars surrounded by the woods IS WHAT IT’S LIKE.

Anyway, I personally like the 3-wick version because we go through them so quickly, but they’ve recently come out with this ceramic one that’s making my life a whole lot better, etc. Lucky for us, there’s a Unionmade store just minutes from our apartment in Brentwood and we are literally there every few months stocking up. Want me to pick one up for you? Can’t live without.

HANGING PRINTS + THANKSGIVING

dining update / the style eater

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I spent mine with my family and loved every second of it. Don’t even get me started on sweet potatoes. My mom makes 10 lbs of sweet potatoes every Thanksgiving and I cry for days when the leftovers are gone. All in all, it was a great day. Plus, 4-day weekend!!

Also, here’s a little peek at our updated dining area (sorry for the crappy iphone pic, yikes). We got rid of the giant wood table and replaced it with a much smaller, white one. I’ll post more details when it’s a bit more presentable, but just wanted to share Kyle’s “I-CAN’T-FIGURE-OUT-WHERE-TO-HANG-THIS-SHIT” face. We ordered this print for above our bed, but when it finally came in the mail, we chickened out and decided that the risk of death-by-falling-art is not something we want to subject ourselves to (you know, California earthquakes and such). Anyway, it’s a photo I took from our trip to Big Sur and it is HUGE. No idea where to put it now, but it might just land above the dining table.

So there’s that. December is here and I’m feeling really positive about it so far.

OUR HOUSE SMELLS LIKE CAMPFIRE

April 9, 2013

I really love a good smelling house (but who doesn’t?) and right now, we’re all about burning incense in my apartment. We burn miniature-sized logs in that miniature-sized cabin and our whole apartment smells of woodsy trees and burning fire. And YES, the smoke billows out of the log cabin’s chimneys – I can’t take it, it’s so cute.

Sometimes we’ll also burn a candle in the same scent family (like a cedar wood-based candle) to really kick it up a notch. This Unionmade x Baxter candle is our all-time favorite. All we need are ingredients for s’mores and we’d have a full-fledged campfire situation.

What are your favorite kind of scents?

*PS, here’s the log cabin!
