An Open Letter to Black Friday

Dear Black Friday,

I apologize for not waking up at 3 AM to join in on your tradition of absolute madness. Yes, I know I’ve been an avid Black Friday shopper in the past but this year, I just wasn’t feeling it. I don’t want to buy DVDs for $1.99 or electric mixers for $39.99 with a $39.99 rebate.

This year, I don’t need crap that I will never use. Sorry BF, I’m just being honest with you. Sure, you have some pretty amazing deals but most of the crap on sale, I would never buy under normal circumstances. Like I said, I don’t need a $14 3 megapixel camera or a Snuggie on sale for $5. So stop teasing me with your advertisements and mega-deals. I don’t need them in my life.

So, Black Friday, this is why I did not participate in your ridiculous shenanigans this year.

…Okay maybe I should be a little more honest with you. The truth is I’m leaving you for someone else. Yes, that’s right, I’m leaving you for Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday and I just get along better. With CM, I don’t have to wake up at 3 AM. I don’t have to wait in lines, smell leftover turkey on people’s breaths, make impulse purchases. Because you know, Black Friday, you’re all about the impulse purchases. With Cyber Monday, I can take my time, scroll through the pages, and make sound-minded decisions. So all in all, we’re done.

Thanks for the memories,

Janelle

Apologies

I apologize for being M.I.A. for the past 5 days. I’d like to say that I was too busy focusing all of my energies on Thanksgiving preparations but that would only be semi-true. Yes, I’ve been busy with Thanksgiving but that’s not the reason I haven’t posted.

The real reason is that I’ve been…New Mooned. Yes, that’s right, I’ve been all too occupied with New Moon. Not because of the delicious man candy in the film (though it’s certainly a plus). But because, like a true lover of English literature, I have been diligently notating all of the film’s references (both subtle and not so subtle) to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

And boy oh boy, there are a TON. Yes, I was that girl who took multiple Shakespeare classes in college just for fun. What can I say? I have a thing for star-crossed lovers.

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, consume. (II.6.9-11)

If you’d like to discuss this reference (along with the many others throughout the movie), let me know. In the meantime, I will get back to regular blogging shortly, focusing especially on Thanksgiving in the next 48 hours…

An Evening with David Sedaris

Here at The Style Eater, I won’t often venture into topics outside the realm of style and eating, but today I will make an exception to tell you about one of my all time favorite authors, David Sedaris. I went to the Irvine Barclay Theater last night to hear Sedaris give a reading and I swear I’ve never heard anyone speak so eloquently and humorously at the same time. Of course, that’s exactly how his writing is but to hear him read aloud in person is something I’ll never forget. My glasses kept fogging up because I was laughing so hard – you may not think the two are related but they are. Sedaris read snippets from his diary as recently dated as October 17th, new “fables” he’d been working on, and a hilarious in-depth about jury duty.
Before the reading, Kyle (my lovely boyfriend) and I waited in line to get one of our books signed. While Sedaris was signing, he drew a picture of an obese cat on the inside cover of my book and predicted that Kyle and I would break up in 2017. Though it was quite a disconcerting comment, it still left me wondering who would keep the signed book (complete with fat cat) if that were to happen…
…just kidding, darling!

Confessions of a Style Eater

Confession #1: I am a foodie.  I crave food.  Blueberries, chocolate ganache, butternut squash risotto, spicy tuna on crispy rice.  I need it and I love it.  Good food, good wine – I live for it (well obvs I need it to survive, but I meant more psychologically).  I cook, I scour for recipes, I dine in, I dine out.  When food is involved, I am a happier person.

Confession #2: I have a deep-rooted obsession for vampires (not that Vampire Diaries crap, I’m talking Sookie Stackhouse and Twilight circa 2008) thanks to R-Patz but that is neither here nor there so let’s try to forget this confession.

Confession #3: I want those thigh-high Pretty Woman boots that have walked down every FW 09 runway.  Not just because Pretty Woman was my favorite movie growing up.  Not just because they are clearly out of my budget.  But because I need them.  Oh no no no, not any ol’ thigh-high, my dear friends.  I’m talking about the Jimmy Choo for H&M boots that arrive in H&M stores on November 14th.  The entire Jimmy Choo diffusion line comes out on that date AND with H&M prices to boot! (No pun intended).

Confession #4: I am a style eater.  I’m not just writing about fashion and food.  I crave anything and everything that tickles my style fancy, from beauty products to my favorite stylish cities across the world to art.  I eat it all up.  And I love it.
