Transitioning Into Spring: Ankle Jeans

January 15, 2010

Sometimes for me, it’s difficult to transition into spring. I never know what to wear! Am I still allowed to wear black? Do I have to wear a pastel dress? What’s the rule on tall boots? Must I change my mood from brooding to cheery?

All I know is that I’m loving ankle jeans right now. I feel like they could be a great transitioning tool from winter to spring, don’t you agree? They show just an ever-so-small amount of leg. Basically you are telling the world that you don’t need wool socks & rain boots anymore. Actually I’m pretty sure it rains in the spring so scratch that theory. Just know that ankle jeans are perfect for breaking out of the winter doldrums.

So if you feel like it’s time to sun your ankles a little bit, here are my favorite ankle jeans:

My Own Personal Heaven

The corner of Broadway and Broome St in SoHo houses Madewell in all it’s preppy-chic glory (at the very corner) and Topshop, the UK-based trendy haven (two stores down). My friends, these are my two favorite stores. You could imagine the jubilee I was experiencing whilst navigating my way through the hundreds upon hundreds of frenzied holiday shoppers packed and herded into each of these shops.

Bliss, I tell you, pure bliss. No but in all seriousness, I would consider the corner of B’way & Broome on my top 10 list of ideal heavens, right between Edward Cullen’s Forks mansion and Santorini, Greece.

Dare I say it’s sweater weather??

The weather in sunny Southern California is slowly getting cooler (color me surprised!!) and that means only one thing: it’s time for sweaters. In other parts of the country, people are dusting off their puffer coats and snow gloves but NOT here!! All you need is a cardigan and you’re ready to go.

This winter, I’m totally obsessed with thick, chunky grandpa sweaters like this Madewell Northern Lights Cardigan pictured above. Not only does it look really comfy, but it will definitely keep you warm in our mid-60s weather. Paired with a tee, skinny jeans, and a pair of boots, this cardigan will fit perfectly in any winter wardrobe. If you’re really feeling the recession and can’t afford to buy a new chunky sweater, maybe take a looksie around your grandpa’s closet and you’ll find something totally perfect for this winter?? You just know he has one. Here’s hoping…

Scarf Season

Bottom line, my favorite seasons are fall and winter. No disrespect to summer and spring but the blistering sun freckles my face and blooming flowers rile up my allergies like no other. Don’t get me wrong, I love the hot weather – I live in Southern California for goodness sake. But there’s something about wintery weather that puts a smile on my face. It means only one thing: LAYERING UP!

Cardigans, sweaters, long tees, flannel shirts, blazers, peacoats, leather jackets – all perfect tools in the art of layering. But, by far, my absolute FAVORITE layering tool is scarves. Every year, I look for new and interesting patterns and shapes to add to my diverse collection. When on a scarf hunt, one of the first places I look is J.Crew’s sister company, Madewell. Not only is Madewell my favorite brand for clothing, but they also have the BEST collection of scarves. If you want to see this collection with your own eyes, you have to visit one of their retail stores (California locations include Century City Mall and Americana at Brand).

This year, I have my eyes on a tube scarf. I’ve looked high and low for one of these babies for the past few weeks and let me tell you, they are hard to find! But of course Madewell came through for me in the form of their heather oatmeal funnel scarf (pictured). It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. There’s something about this scarf that looks so comfy and warm! I would wear one right now if it wasn’t 85 degrees outside.
