Summer Lovin’: Shorts Edition

May 26, 2010

Shorts are my summer uniform.  Sure, I like to mix it up with a dress here and a skirt there but overall, nothing is more appropriate in the summertime than shorts.  Just like the dresses I picked out, these are my favorite short styles this season.

First of all, I love anything that comes pre-belted.  It adds a sense of refinement to a seemingly casual piece of clothing like shorts.  Just tuck a loose-fitting blouse into those belted shorts and pair them with flats and you have an instant summer office outfit.

As for the rolled denim, I personally think nothing’s better than cutting up an old pair of jeans to mid-thigh length and rolling the hem to your desired length.  A few summers ago, I cut 2 pairs of my high school jeans into shorts and I’ve worn them religiously ever since.  But, if you don’t have old jeans to destroy, the 3 rolled denim shorts below are perfect options!

As I’ve mentioned before, I love a good print.  It instantly spices up an outfit!  All 3 of the patterned shorts below have an almost childish charm to them.  They make me want to ride the ferris wheel and eat cotton candy at a carnival.  There’s nothing wrong with expressing your inner 13 year old!  Am I right??

Summer Dress Lovin’

Summer is slowing creeping upon us and I can’t wait for the sun to arrive in full force.  In preperation, I scoured my favorite online retailers, from ASOS to Need Supply Co., in search of the perfect summer dress.

As I started picking out my favorites, I noticed a trend with my choices.  They were either corset topped (or sweetheart neckline, if you prefer that terminology), striped (of course), or wildly printed.  So I narrowed it down to my favorite 3 in each of these categories:

The corset top dress is perfect for afternoon barbecues or picnics in the park with friends.  They’re so sweet and summery:

  1. Urban Renewal Striped Linen Bustier Dress, Urban Outfitters, $58
  2. Dahlia Net Layer Babydoll Dress, ASOS, $118.36
  3. Chambray Corset Dress, Victoria’s Secret, $39.99

These striped dresses can be worn during work hours or even on weekend beach trips.  They’re versatile and never go out of style:

  1. Dahlia Striped Full Belted Dress, ASOS, $93
  2. Striped Knit Dress, Need Supply Co., $48
  3. LnA Stripe Tee Dress, Revolve Clothing, $105

Even though the prints vary, they all pack a colorful punch – exactly what you need in the summer months!  I would wear the sweeter prints (like the florals and polka dots) during the day and the bolder prints (like the zig zag) for a night of cocktails with friends or on a date with my boyfriend:

  1. Contrast Pocket Dress, Need Supply Co., $48
  2. Dahlia Vintage Print Belted Dress, ASOS, $93
  3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Diamond Zigzag Dress, Shopbop, $258

Sometimes, I’ll come across a look that I’m absolutely head-over-heels in love with.  Such is the case with Michelle Williams’ ensemble at the photo call for her film, Blue Valentine, in Cannes.

The Suno dress and pixie cut ooze girlish charm while the wedges scream resort collection.  It’s simple yet so chic and fun.  Altogether it’s a beautiful medley of perfection and I just can’t get enough!

High Vs. Low: The Wedge

Not only am I a huge lover of the wedge, I’m positively smitten with any and all Cynthia Vincent.  When I came across the right wedge on Piperlime.com, I knew I could never afford such a glorious shoe.  But it immediately reminded me of Cynthia Vincent’s collaboration with Target that she did last month (left wedge)…

Now these wedges are clearly not the same shoe but I can’t help notice the striking similarities.  Of course, the $30 version sold out weeks ago but luckily, they’re all over ebay for around $60 which is still a solid $300 cheaper than the original version.

Oh Cynthia, why are you so great???  Making affordable versions of unattainable (well, for my wallet) shoes!  How sweet of you.  And just as an FYI, her other Target shoes are just as cute.

Pierre Hardy for Gap

Ever since Refinery 29 and my friend Vivian posted about Pierre Hardy’s fall collection for GAP, I’ve been counting down the days, hours, and minutes for it to arrive in stores.  And yes it comes out this fall (aka 4 months away) but I’ve never been more excited for shoes.

And then…Pierre Hardy (again, in collab with GAP) goes ahead and springs a SPRING collection on us that comes out May 10th?  WHAT?!  Oh my goodness, my heart is a-racing.  And did I mention that the shoes are beyond swoonworthy?  I love a good wedge!
