SMILEBOOTH / THE STYLE EATER

Happy Friday! I’m feeling really positive about life today and I’m pretty sure it’s because I have braids in my hair again and I saw Gwyneth Paltrow last night. What is it about braids that make the world a happier place?  I opted for a reverse crown braid this time.  If I’m feeling extra ham-y today, I’ll take a picture of myself and show ya.  As for my BFF GP, we were at the same event last night, as seen here, and that woman is a beacon of light straight from the heavens.

Anyway, I’m loving this Smilebooth session with Ann-Marie from The Cream event a few weeks ago! That girl is my favorite and she has the best top buns, am I right? Also, here’s what else I’m loving this week:

  • My bff Jaymee had her beautiful wedding featured on 100 Layer Cake this week!  You must take a look at all the amazing details that she designed and made.
  • I’m dying to make this spicy tuna bowl.
  • This is my ideal bedroom.  Can you see where I got the inspo from in this post?
  • Things got really spontaneous this week and we got tickets to Lollapalooza in Chicago. SO EXCITED.
  • I’m looking forward to stopping by the Northern Grade pop-up in downtown LA tomorrow for some menswear inspiration.

Hope your weekend is great!  I’ll be catching up on a few things, taking more classes, and hopefully relaxing a bit.  Same place, same time on Monday? xo

BEDROOM UPDATE

April 3, 2013

I’ve lived in my current apartment for 2 years now and have focused zero of my decorating attention on the bedroom.  I’ve kept it very simple with just a plain wood bedframe, nondescript nightstands, and a credenza-shaped dresser.  That’s it.  I don’t know why I haven’t brought a little life into it before now, but it REALLY needs to be jazzed up.  It needs SOMETHING, ya know?

So my next project is for sure a bedroom update.  Here’s what I plan to add:

01| these mid-century modern-style nightstands from west elm.

02 | a leather butterfly chair and since we can’t quite afford the real version, this urban outfitters one will do just fine.

03 | i scored this Pennyweight x Oh Deer print a few months ago and it’s one of my favorites. it’s rolled up in a tube now but i think it will be a perfect addition to the bedroom.

04 | a few faux sheepskins around the room would add just the right amount of texture.

05 | two swinging lamps that would look great on either side of the bed above the nightstands.

06 | one colorful pillow on the bed (my linens are all white, by the way) would add a nice pop amongst the otherwise neutral tones of the room.

07 | a shaggy rug to make it extra cozy and homey.

ESSENTIALS: ANKLE BOOTS

I would not consider myself a shoe person.  I don’t like shopping for them, I don’t like wearing colorful or bright ones, and you won’t see me wearing pointy heels unless I absolutely have to.  When I think about how I want to spend my money, it’s usually on things like Martha Stewart iphone apps and polka dot shirts, not shoes.  But I’d be lying straight to your face if I said I didn’t dabble in ankle boots every so often.

Pretty much the only shoes I wear are boots of the ankle variety.  I just love them.  They speak to me.  They say “Janelle, we GET YOU. We understand you. Let’s be together forever.”  I mean, I can’t really say no to that.  Laced, Chelsea, motorcycle, heeled, faux Isabel Marants, you name em, I love em.  But my love for shoes starts and stops there.  I don’t care about any other kind, really.

So with that, my essential shoe is 100% the ankle boot.  Thanks for completing my life.  See examples of ankle bootage here, here, here, and here.

PALM SPRINGS PHOTO DIARY

PalmSprings / the style eater

Palm Springs in March is a golden slice of perfection. The weather isn’t too hot (yet), the hotels aren’t too expensive, the pools aren’t overcrowded, and pretty much life rules 24/7 there.

Also, you’ll notice about a hundred photos in this post and that’s because I’m taking a photo editing class and I need my practice. Lots and lots of practice.

First, a few snaps from Ace Hotel Palm Springs, where we stayed. I literally cannot recommend this hotel more. It’s one of my absolute favorites (photos from my last trip here). It has so much character and puts out serious good vibes. The rooms are also quite dreamy, especially if you can get one with a patio. Oh and the pool! Pool days there are top notch.

We spent an afternoon at the newish (and very colorful) Saguaro hotel, where we ate tacos and drank a few margaritas. This place is sure easy on the eyes. What a beaut!

We strolled around the gorgeous Parker Palm Springs and had brunch at my favorite place in all the land, Norma’s. I’ll tell you one thing right now…I want to LIVE at the Parker. I don’t want to just stay there for a few days. I want it to be my own private house. It’s such a dream.

Hey PS…I love you!

BB Dakota shirt, Topshop denim shorts, Madewell Sunglasses, Topshop Sandals (old)

I love, love, love hot weather. My soul craves it. My pale skin obviously needs it too. I swear these photos were taken BEFORE I laid out by the pool and not after! But give me a 90 degree day and a pair of shorts and I’m in my happy zone. Also, I’m that person who wears a palm tree shirt in Palm Springs. I just HAD to. It felt right, ya know?

As mentioned here, I spent the last few days in PS and I’ll be damned if my soul doesn’t feel a hundred times better! The heat will do that to ya. More photos from the trip coming tomorrow.
